Getting CE in teaching Chinese (world language)
· A Bachelor's or advanced degree with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
· 30-credits in Chinese language, literature, civilization and culture courses, of which at least 12 are at the 300 level or higher. These 30 credits can be acquired through one or more of the following methods.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree: If your degree is from a country other than the United States, your transcripts must be evaluated by an NJ DOE approved foreign transcript evaluation service to determine how many credits these courses are equivalent to in the US. Click here for a listing of some evaluation services.
(I recommend using WES)
https://www.wes.org/index.asp - NYU Mandarin 16-Point Proficiency Exam: Points achieved on the proficiency exam can be worth up to 16 credits, but must be placed on a transcript, which can be done by Thomas Edison State College. Rutgers University does not offer this transcript service.
16 Points breakdown: 12 credits for lower level (100 ~200), 4 credits (writing section) for upper level (300~400)
YOU SHOULD CALL NYU EXAM AND CHOOSE AN EXAM DATE FIRST. When you are in the exam filling information, make sure you put Thomas Edison State College as the school you want to send the exam result. THEN FILL THE CREDIT TRANSFER APPLICATION FROM EDISON STATE COLLEGE AND SEND IT TO THE COLLEGE WITH PAYMENT. Usually it takes 6 weeks for NYU to process your exam result. After NYU send a pass letter to Edison State College, it takes 2 weeks for the college to process the credit transfer. - Undergraduate 300- and 400-level courses or graduate courses in Chinese offered at Rutgers Department of Asian Language and Culture during the Academic Year and Summer Session.
For people who only want to get CE, it’s ok to take 300 level classes but not recommended. If you want to apply into MAT program in the future, don’t take 300 level classes. Only 400 level classes count to the 30 credits of MAT.
· 3-credits in a state-approved course on second language acquisition and related methodologies.
Recommend to take class: METHODS OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING (K-12). 16:617:500 from WLI at Rutgers. Check schedule online: http://wli.rutgers.edu/wli.php?page=chinese
· A rating of Intermediate-High or above on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview in Mandarin Chinese. It is highly recommended that native speakers of Mandarin Chinese also take an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview in English, for which a rating of Advanced-Low must be achieved.
You can also call WLI for schedule the test. You only need t take the test in Mandarin, English test is not required.
• New requirement: 24 Hours pre-serves teacher program.
Check all County Community college. The course required 20 hours in class and 4 hours of observation in a school classroom. When you take class, make sure you consider the opportunity of observation. Make sure you find at least 2 to 3 schools that you want to observe. Call schools for permission of observation and schedule it. Try to avoid major holidays and breaks; otherwise you will never get reply from schools. I took class at Mercer County Community College. The class was very good.
